This is the title of one of my favorite books. Susan Scott digs into the world of conversation and is very direct about the need to have clear and powerful communication with employees. Here are a couple of her observations with some of my thoughts:

Perhaps what we thought was the truth is no longer the truth in today’s environment

Procrastination is the greatest killer of good people. And we not only procrastinate but we justify it. We think, “I called on that guy two years ago and he wasn’t interested. He’s a waste of time.” Have things changed?

Few, if any, forces in human affairs are as powerful as shared vision

I love working with individuals and companies that have a vision for themselves. They know what they want their life to look like in five and ten years. It’s so clear you can smell it. What a rush to be helping people who are doing more than struggling through another day.

We may succeed in hearing every word yet miss the message altogether

Ever meet with a salesperson that couldn’t wait to tell you about himself and his stuff. Tom Peters (In Search of Excellence) said the highest form of respect is listening. Truer words have not been spoken.

We can believe what we choose. We are answerable for what we choose to believe

Our belief systems design our life. Whatever we want to have happen can only happen if we first believe it can happen and if we secondly are willing to do the behaviours to make it a reality.
